Design Challenge

4.7
(1,654 ratings)

Teams rapidly prototype solutions to design problems using limited materials and short time constraints.

Design Challenge puts teams through a compressed design thinking process. Given a problem statement and limited materials (paper, tape, cardboard, pipe cleaners, etc.), teams must ideate, prototype, test, and present a solution within tight time constraints. This hands-on activity teaches design thinking principles, encourages creative problem-solving, and demonstrates the power of rapid prototyping. It is excellent for innovation training, team building, and developing a bias toward action.

Objective

Teach design thinking, rapid prototyping, and creative problem-solving through hands-on building.

Materials Needed
  • Craft supplies: paper, cardboard, tape, glue, scissors
  • Pipe cleaners, straws, rubber bands
  • Markers and drawing materials
  • Timer
  • Challenge prompt cards

How to Play

1

Present Design Challenge

5 min

Reveal the challenge: "Design a device that can safely land an egg from 6 feet", "Create packaging for a new product", etc.

2

Empathize and Ideate

20 min

Teams discuss user needs, brainstorm solutions (15 mins). Must generate multiple concepts before selecting one to build.

3

Rapid Prototyping

40 min

Teams build their prototype using provided materials (30-40 mins). Emphasize making it testable, not perfect.

4

Test and Iterate

15 min

Teams test their prototypes. If time allows, make one round of improvements based on test results.

5

Present and Judge

30 min

Teams present their solutions (3 mins each). Judge on creativity, functionality, presentation. Celebrate all efforts!

Pro Tips

preparationImportant

Test the challenge yourself first to ensure it's achievable but difficult.

facilitationImportant

Emphasize that "failing" is part of the process - celebrate creative attempts.

Variations

Try these variations to adapt the game for different contexts and group sizes.

Digital Design Challenge
Design digital products or services instead of physical prototypes.

Changes:

Additional Materials
  • Design software or paper for wireframing
Constraint-Based Design
Add unusual constraints: "must use exactly 3 materials" or "cannot use tape".
